🏫 Campus Spotlight: The Stories Behind Samford Hall at Auburn University

At the heart of Auburn University stands a building that embodies school pride, resilience, and tradition: Samford Hall. From its red brick tower and iconic clock to the melodic chimes of the Auburn fight song, Samford Hall is more than just architecture — it’s the beating heart of the Plains.

⏳ A Look Back: From Ruins to Resilience

Samford Hall didn’t always look this way. Its story began in 1859, when the original building on this site — "Old Main" — served as the main classroom building for East Alabama Male College (Auburn’s original name). Tragically, Old Main burned to the ground in 1887.

But like Auburn’s unshakable spirit, something stronger rose in its place. In 1888, Samford Hall was built using some of the salvaged bricks from Old Main. It was named after Governor William J. Samford, an Auburn alumnus and Alabama’s 31st governor.

From that moment on, Samford Hall has stood tall — a symbol of tradition, perseverance, and transformation.

🎵 Sounds of Auburn: More Than a Clock Tower

Every hour, the Samford Hall clock tower rings out across campus — a sound that’s both comforting and energizing. But Auburn students and alumni know it’s not just about the time.

The clock tower plays the Auburn fight song daily at noon, adding an emotional punch to what might otherwise be a regular midday break. It’s a reminder: this is Auburn.

🐅 Traditions Built Around Samford Hall

  • “War Eagle!” chants echo from the steps during pep rallies and homecoming celebrations.

  • Graduation photos? You’ll see hundreds of students in caps and gowns proudly posing in front of the building’s iconic columns.

  • The clock tower is often lit in blue and orange for special occasions or victories, shining across the campus skyline.

Samford Hall isn’t just part of campus — it defines it.
